Learning how to communicate in methods other than traditional writing is vital in today's society. Here are some instances in which I have done so.
Chipping teeth: "this I believe" podcast
This podcast is modeled after the "This I Believe" series broadcast by NPR. The goal is to craft a short essay about a specific belief or value you hold, and to record yourself reading the speech aloud. In my podcast, I attempt to describe my relationship to my extended family and the degree to which I value spending time with them. To do so, I focus on a specific event that occurred between me and one of my younger cousins and share my belief in the importance of enthusiastic greetings.
This podcast demonstrates a different set of skills than a traditional written work. Writing a piece for oral presentation requires attention to different details, such as sentence structure and language flow. Additionally, reading aloud a written piece takes practice and time. I think I did a good job not only writing the piece with these constraints in mind, but also in the presentational aspect with my verbal tone and pacing.

the controversy behind the nsa prism program
|
This video project, completed as a group, is intended to inform the audience about a controversy by exploring the issue from all angles. My group decided to focus on the NSA's PRISM program, which at the time had just been revealed. I wrote the script for this video, found many of the images and clips included, and was involved in selecting the music. In order to make the two sides of the issue easier to differentiate, I wrote the script with alternating viewpoints, and two different members of our group took turns reading each part.
Writing a script for a video is similar in a sense to writing for a podcast, but in this case the audience and tone is completely different than the podcast above. This piece is meant to be informative, and I paid much attention to finding the right balance of sentence complexity. The sentences have to be simple and short enough to sound natural when spoken, but complex enough to convey information without sounding too elementary. |
